Here are some of our fundamental concepts from the Church’s teaching on society and the family as articulated by Crean and Fimister in their book Integralism:
‘The family is the necessary society constituted immediately by every fruitful marriage.’
‘The efficient cause is the promise of mutual fidelity in the work of procreation and education of offspring.’
‘Education is the raising of children to the level of complete adulthood, and comprises bodily training, intellectual instruction, and formation in prudence and the virtues directed by prudence.’
‘Marriage can be contracted only by a man and woman capable of carnal intercourse.’
‘Authority is that elevation of one above another within a society which consists in or gives the right to command in view of obtaining the end of that society.’
‘The husband has the natural right to govern his wife so that their family may attain its end. But he ought to desire her counsel and aid in his government.’
‘The parents have the natural right to govern their children in view of the goal of their common domestic society.’
‘The family is prior to the temporal commonwealth in notion and in reality and hence has duties and rights which are independent of it.’
‘The family and not the individual is the basic unit of the temporal commonwealth.’
